You can't stop a mammoth.
Forged from rock ‘n’ roll soul, blue-collar charm and a renegade attitude, it’s no surprise this quintet of bearded prairie men made a lasting impression with audiences on their well-received 2014 EP, Mountain. Royal Tusk‘s full-length debut, DealBreaker out May 6, 2016 via MapleMusic Recordings, embraces a dynamic evolution in the band’s sound. Produced by the award-winning Eric Ratz (Big Wreck, Monster Truck, Arkells, Billy Talent), DealBreaker captures the true raw energy Royal Tusk wield, and the result is loud and guitar-driven with hints of Americana and soul.
Lead vocalist and guitarist Daniel Carriere says: “We’ve always been a guitar-driven band, but Mountain focused on highlighting our pop songwriting. For DealBreaker, we wanted to maintain that songwriting integrity, but make an old-fashioned heavy-guitar record.” After touring with Royal Tusk, Ian Thornley of Big Wreck was so impressed he lent his venerable guitar skills to DealBreaker with a massive solo on “So Long The Build Up”.
"These are really great guys, in a really great band. It was an absolute pleasure to play on their record." - Ian Thornley
DealBreaker is best listened to in its entirety. Though there’s a broad spectrum of songs, they’ll each draw you in. Whether it's the raw energy of "Curse the Weather," the anthemic sing-along choruses of "Soon," or the authentic heartfelt songwriting in "Not So Fast," there's a track on the record that feels like it's there just for you. The album opens with the bombastic "Dynamo," and the first half of DealBreaker flies by in a gritty fury, finishing off with "Cold On Me," a groovy tune which features a four minute off-the-floor jam reminiscent of Deep Purple. The second half opens with Royal Tusk’s lead single "Fever," a jubilant yet desperate song of a love-lost sleepwalker, searching for clarity. Only after the last note disintegrates you realize what a journey DealBreaker is.
Royal Tusk was born with a shared love for the craft of music, and a natural chemistry that manifests itself in the band’s songs and in its fiery live performances. Carriere and Sandy MacKinnon (bass) spent 12 years in beloved JUNO-nominated Edmonton band, Ten Second Epic and knew they weren’t done making great music. They rounded up Quinn Cyrankiewicz (guitar), Calen Stuckel (drums) and Mike James (keyboard/guitars) for a jam session, and just 10 months later the band headed to New York to record Mountain with Gus Van Go (Hollerado, Whitehorse, The Stills). “Shadow of Love” and "Smoke Rings" were breakout tracks off Mountain and both saw significant radio-play. These singles helped earn Royal Tusk a 2015 SIRIUSXM Emerging Artist of the Year nomination, an “artist of the month" nod from Sonic 102.9, and a short-list spot for CBC’s 2014 Rising Star Award.
After touring extensively and sharing the stage with artists including Big Wreck, Dear Rouge and Metric, Royal Tusk has spent the past year writing, embracing growth in its sound and songwriting. It’s no doubt that with DealBreaker you can expect a louder, more confident and longer-haired Royal Tusk.
LUCETTE At once both beautiful and haunting, the chilling power of Lucette’s gentle voice is unwavering and undeniable. Although young, it is obvious to all those who listen to her that Lucette is an old and doggedly romantic soul. Full of emotion, her performances take audiences back to the days when artists such as Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, and Loretta Lynn dominated the airwaves. The single 'Bobby Reid' off of Lucette's debut album, Black Is the Color, was completed in just one take, capturing the raw and melancholy fluctuations of her effortless and mysterious sound. Teaming up with Blake Judd of Judd Films to shoot the track's music video, Lucette commented, "I feel truly fortunate to have been given the opportunity to work with such amazing people on the 'Bobby Reid' video. Blake Judd (with Judd Films) really believed in the project and believed in bringing the song to life." The video, which features Sturgill Simpson and JD Wilkes, premiered on CMT Pure and CMTEdge.com. Working with acclaimed producer Dave Cobb (Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell, Jamey Johnson, Secret Sisters) Lucette wrote and recorded the full-length album, Black Is the Color, in under a month. The two have collaborated and worked together since she was 19 years old. 2014 saw Lucette taking to the road and touring more than ever before. She was direct support on Sturgill Simpson's nearly sold-out fall tour and toured or performed with artists such as Nikki Lane, The Secret Sisters, Joe Ely, Jim Lauderdale and Mason Jennings, among others. In 2015, Lucette made her SXSW debut in Austin with 5 performances, joined Mason Jennings on two runs of shows, toured with Joe Ely and played the Calgary Folk Music Festival, Edmonton's Interstellar Rodeo and Nashville's AmericanaFest. 2015 will see her back on the road with David Ramirez starting February 13th!
Nuela Charles released her debut album "Aware" in late 2012, and it went on to be the very first recipient of the inaugural Edmonton Music Prize in 2013 — earning $8,000 and the honour of the city’s best album.
Charles has since gone on to win numerous awards and go on to be nominated for countless more. Three years after its release "Aware" has showed no signs of slowing down, with songs still being picked up on CBC Radio 2, and being placed in various TV shows. The album’s saxy and sexy "Unfortunate Love" has been earning regular spins on LA’s Tastemaker radio station KCRW. And songs such as "Crash," "Final Round," "Unfortunate Love" and "Good In Me" have been appearing in TV shows on VH1, Family Channel, W Network, CityTV, MTV and Showtime, respectively.

Scenic Route to Alaska
Scenic Route to Alaska
Growing up together in Edmonton, Alberta, Trevor Mann, Murray Wood and Shea Connor have been friends for as long as they can remember. Since 2011, Scenic Route to Alaska has been shaping Mann's material into their unique prairie-indie sound. With songs that surprise as much as they satisfy a thirst, Altameda is combining the country drawl of Gram Parsons with the raw alt aesthetic of The Replacements. What started as a vehicle for singer-songwriter Troy Snaterse’s solo material quickly turned into group effort to create something genuine. Despite the fact that every member of Altameda has roots in various genres, it became obvious to the group to make the music that shaped them early on. During the first recording sessions of the group’s debut LP Dirty Rain, it became clear that there was an undeniable chemistry. Altameda quickly set out to shape their sound that blended the sincerity of the old with the unabashed grit of the new. “Bolstered by harmonica, pedal steel and toe-tapping percussion, [Dirty Rain] is a twangy, heartfelt alt-country cut.” Exclaim! “I was immediately swept away by the classic Americana feel of Altameda’s “Dirty Rain”. It’s alt-country poetry in the highest form.” MilkCrater.com
"Old Towns is the moniker of singer-songwriter, Robbie Shirriff. Blending the raw energy and driving force of punk, with the simplistic beauty of folk, Shirriff’s love songs will have you stomping along, and his drinking songs will make your heart smile. In addition to playing this year’s Pouzza Fest in Montreal, he has been featured in Dying Scene, Bucketlist Reviews, and Punknews, who place him to the tradition of such acts as Chuck Ragan, Joey Cape, and Andrew Jackson Jihad. Raised in Saskatoon, SK, Shirriff has three releases to date, including 2014’s Leaving Songs and 2015’s The Northey Sessions. He has a forthcoming split EP with Vancouver musician Bryan Michael, and plans for a full-length release in the future. At 24 years old, his talent as a singer is magnetic, and perfectly accompanied by the warm, robust chords of his acoustic guitar, his harmonica, and his boots on the floor. If folk is said to be '3 chords and the truth', then Old Towns is that with a nosebleed and a three-dollar pint."

A decade ago two young men from different parts of Alberta united to form Audio/Rocketry. Their bond and band name came from a shared love of music, notably a compilation that lent their moniker. The album featured punk bands doing acoustic songs, including Against Me! and Lawrence Arms. Similar to the trajectory of these groups, Audio/Rocketry have evolved over their discography, with their punk and folk dichotomy most fully realized on their latest album.
Over the years, recording sessions and live shows have featured the core of Joe Vickers (vocals/ guitar) and Matt Murphy (bass) with a rotating cast of support. With the addition of Blair Drover (guitar) and Jerome Tovillo (drums), the band’s sonic template has grown from their raw folk punk roots to a more diverse and mature sound. The four members migrated from various points of the province to their base of Edmonton, where the vibrant music scene has welcomed and enfolded the member’s within.
Audio/Rocketry have toured extensively. The songs have travelled across Canada numerous times, into the United States and through Europe. They have shared the stage with a diverse range of artists, from The Menzingers to Chuck Ragan and played the renowned Pouzza Fest in Montreal. After a soft hiatus where each member explored other musical projects, they have returned in 2016, revitalized and ready to hit the road and share their new songs.
